Abstract
This research explored the sensemaking process of former international missionaries during organizational exit to expand upon research and exit models in volunteer membership. Semi-structured interviews were used to obtain data from former members of one sponsoring organization, and data was coded and interpreted using qualitative methods. Results revealed two distinct exit pathways based on members' identity constructions. Additionally, membership in a total institution shaped missionary service and the exit phase. This study highlights future research opportunities for volunteer memberships involving fixed-terms and ambiguous membership contracts.
