Abstract

At heightened rates, Black women are experiencing morality in pregnancy and what should be a joyous moment of life, turns into a fight to survive. It is unclear why Black women experience this disparity, but there are hypotheses. During the perinatal period, they experience more mental health issues like depression, and more physical heath complications like hemorrhage, which could lead to increased risk of death. However, the bias seen in the healthcare system, that has developed through a history of systemic racism also plays a role in these unfortunate outcomes.
