Abstract

Research suggests that epigenetic mechanisms, now acknowledged for their role in DNA transcription, significantly contribute to both functional and structural plasticity. This paper assesses the impact of epigenetics on DNA structure, influencing levels of plasticity, and subsequently affecting functional and structural alterations post-traumatic brain injury (TBI). Through a thorough review of academic literature on epigenetics and TBI, this paper identifies key findings and methodologies while pinpointing areas requiring further investigation. It highlights the central role of epigenetic influences in mediating brain plasticity post-TBI, emphasizing the need for comprehensive research to fully understand the underlying mechanisms. Ultimately, it stresses the importance of epigenetic factors in elucidating neural plasticity mechanisms and guiding therapeutic approaches for TBI treatment and rehabilitation.
