dc.description.abstract | Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based healthcare practice that treats autism spectrum disorder (ASD; see discussion in American Psychological Association, 2017). Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) deliver ABA therapy to patients with ASD. Behavior analysts identify, consult, and create treatment plans for treating the symptoms of ASD for patients in need. Behavior analysts work with individuals from diverse ethnic and cultural communities, delivering medically necessary services. Culturally responsive care in ABA treatment is vital for treating patients with ASD and supporting their caregivers. However, many behavior analysts do not have the training or skills to deliver culturally responsive care to patients with ASD. In this multiple-case study, I examined the perceptions of four behavior analysts currently practicing in the behavior analytic field to discover how they use the components of the ACCESS transcultural model in their treatment design. Another purpose of the study was to uncover participants’ perceived barriers to culturally inclusive treatment and to identify assessment strategies for culturally responsive care. Data collection included semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews, and written reflections over six weeks to examine how the behavior analysts apply the components of the ACCESS model in culturally responsive care. Data collection also identified the strategies for culturally responsive care and barriers to ABA treatment. The results from this study indicated the value of a practitioner’s humility and vulnerability and shed light on the importance of establishing trust with caregivers and patients with ASD to ensure culturally responsive ABA treatment. The participants reported that communication across these three areas was essential for facilitating a high quality of life for caregivers and patients with ASD. The results of this study emphasized the value of culturally responsive care in ABA treatment and service delivery to patients with ASD. Findings include strategies for building behavior analysts’ interpersonal skills for delivering culturally responsive ABA treatment to caregivers and ASD patients. | |
