dc.description.abstract | In this thesis, I argue that Nesbit applies her theory of imaginative pedagogy to the way she depicts the Middle Ages within her body of work. In doing so, she encourages her readers to view the medieval past as a potential source of knowledge that, although limited in its scope of direct application, is worthy of thoughtful consideration. This contrasts other depictions of the Middle Ages by her contemporaries, which urged readers to conform to adult behavioral expectations or offered damaging depictions of virtue. In furthering this argument, I examine three key texts across Nesbit’s oeuvre: “The Deliverers of Their Country” (1899), a chapter from The Wouldbegoods entitled “The Canterbury Pilgrims” (1901), and her novel The Enchanted Castle (1907). With these texts, I demonstrate how Nesbit models an approach the medieval as a source of exemplars, virtue, and divine wisdom, empowering readers with the agency to exercise their own imaginations. | |
