dc.description.abstract | In Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, Western sacred music is increasingly becoming popular outside the boundaries of Christianity, with which this particular music is often associated. Not only that, along with the widening popularity of Western art music as a global sound, Western sacred music has been practiced by classical musicians who come from the Islamic faith in Indonesia. At the same time, it has also become a locus of interreligious engagement between Muslims and Christians in this country. This dissertation is an investigation of this fascinating phenomenon by using a hybrid methodology that involves a synthesis of theories and approaches from ethnomusicology, musicology, church music studies, sociology of religion, cultural history, and musical ethnography. The central thesis in this dissertation is that Western sacred music practices in Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country, are an enactment of two important values embedded in Indonesian civil society since the nation’s founding, namely “Unity in Diversity” and “modernity.” From these perspectives, this dissertation contributes to the scholarship of church music studies and Western sacred music from the angle of the Global South and furthers interdisciplinary studies that involve music-making, religion, and culture. | |
