Item Freedom or Safety: An Examination of the First Amendment and National SecurityAbbott, Torie Nicole.; Stone, Sara J.; Journalism.; Honors College. The 1970's were a decade full of change and controversy. Daniel Ellsberg singlehandedly led one of the most controversial acts of his time with his work stealing, copying and distributing the Pentagon Papers. His acts posed an important question to the American people. When it comes to national security or upholding the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, which will prevail? Ellsberg is just an example of a problem that remains relevant today with individuals such as Edward Snowden. Although the importance of national security is irrefutable, for journalists, and Americans collectively, maintaining the First Amendment, and the freedoms explicitly listed within said amendment, is utterly imperative. Nonetheless, I agree in favor of upholding the First Amendment through arguing and analyzing both sides of the debate.
