dc.description.abstract | Finding the solution to successful agrarian reform has been one of the most polemic topics facing the developing world, not to mention one of the major issues that the World Bank has been tasked with helping resolve. In the early 1990s the World Bank started advocating the use of market-led agrarian reform (MLAR) in Brazil, which is a neoclassical approach to land reform focusing on negotiated land redistribution techniques, agricultural efficiency, and rural development. Past state-led attempts at agrarian reform in the country had been criticized for focusing mainly on land expropriation and redistribution which has done little to help increase rural development and productivity. This paper will specifically look at the use of MLAR in Brazil, tracking the progress that it has made and looking at what problems have stood in the way of sustainable rural development and poverty alleviation thus far. | en |
