Item At the crossroads of education and reality- my experience at the Poage Legislative Library.(2015-05-26) Swanson, Erik J.; Ames, Eric S.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. The W.R. Poage Legislative Library was established in September 1979 and honors the legacy of former Congressman W.R. Poage. The library boasts 12 congressional, 8 state legislative, 4 judicial, and several other collections all designed to tell the story of Texas legislators and government officials. The mission of the Poage Library is to, "support programs designed to inform and educate students, scholars, and the general public ion the history of Congress, the legislative process, and current issues facing both local, state, and national governments." The internship was designed to provide a real world museum experience and compare how the education at Baylor prepares its students. This insight would be invaluable to the faculty and future students. The results of the internship provide a unique look at how the museum studies department transitions in the work force. As expected, there were some resounding successes, such as the exhibit design portion of the project. However, it also highlighted problems that the museum studies program does not cover, with the most notable example being how to compromise with a director who is less trained in museum preservation techniques.Item MAW museum 2.0 : bringing participatory programs to Waco.(2017-06-22) Doyen, Matthew.; Ames, Eric S.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.During the Fall of 2016 and the Spring of 2017, I partnered with the Museum Association of Waco (MAW) to create a Traveling Community Museum. The public outreach project was completed in two phases. In the first phase, we hosted creation stations at the Farmer’s Market and Cultural Arts Fest. The second stage was inclusively pop-up museums, which are temporary displays created by visitors, and was located at businesses around the city. The goal of the project was to spread an awareness of MAW, to promote a love for Waco, and to make an inclusive museum experience.Item "Railroad iron is a magician's rod" : preserving and presenting historic railroad maps through the "magic" of digitization.(2011-01-05T19:47:32Z) Ames, Eric S.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. As digitization projects have become increasingly common, museums of all sizes have fallen under the spell of putting their archival materials online. But the process involves a great deal of advanced planning, sifting through software and hardware options, and finding the scanners and staff to carry them out. Often, small to medium-sized museums lack the resources to carry out a successful digitization project on their own. This project outlines a collaboration between the author and the Railroad and Heritage Museum (RHM) in Temple, Texas. The RHM is home to a collection of late 19th- and early 20th-century railroad engineering survey maps that are often requested by researchers. The RHM had expressed interest in digitizing them and placing them online, but lacked the staff and scanners necessary to do so. Using the resources of the Riley Digitization Center at Baylor University, the author digitized 326 maps and placed them online using Flickr (a digital asset management solution) and Pachyderm (a Flash-based Web site authoring software created for use by museums). This project details the steps involved in that process, as well as some recommendations for museums of modest size that seek to create their own online presence with limited resources.Item A summer of quiet : marketing, collections, and compassion at the Crow Collection of Asian Art.(2017-06-22) Sawyer, Amanda Rae.; Ames, Eric S.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.During the summer of 2016, I spent ten weeks interning at the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art in Dallas with my work split evenly between the Marketing and Collections Departments. While working in Collections, I cataloged a bequest of over 600 objects, inventoried the museum’s permanent collection, and created higher levels consistency throughout PastPerfect records. During my time with the Marketing Department, I worked extensively in the cloud-based CRM platform PatronManager maintaining membership records, building tickets, pulling reports, and researching and building campaigns. I also participated in the development and copyediting of fall membership materials, spearheaded a project to review and debug the institution’s newly launched website, and researched and wrote text for missing exhibition pages. Throughout the internship, I completed “other duties as assigned,” including de-installing exhibits, changing light bulbs in the galleries, and sitting on a committee to revaluate the institution’s internship program, among other tasks. The internship provided insight into the operations of a rapidly growing midsize museum approaching the accreditation process and working to serve as a center of community in a large city.Item Take me to the movie show : curating and creating digital content.(2014-06-11) Lovell, Hannah Haney.; Ames, Eric S.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. The digital presence of museums has continually grown in recent years. This project examines the processes of digitizing a collection and creating digital content. The goals of this project were to select 155 pieces from the Frances G. Spencer Collection of American Popular Sheet Music, digitize them, and then to create audio files for a selection of these pieces. This project utilized the resources at the Riley Digitization Center and the Crouch Fine Arts Library at Baylor University to both digitize and create content. This project serves as a reference for the processes and challenges of selecting and creating digital content.
