Item Archives and libraries at The Museum of Flight.(2017-06-22) Person, Hanna E.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. My internship focused on managing materials in both the library and the archive at The Museum of Flight. The library received a grant to process the manual collection and input data into their MARC database. I cleaned, rehoused, cataloged and organized hundreds of manuals. In the archive I began the process of properly archiving the G. Harry Stine collection. I roughly organized the materials and created an accurate inventory. Then I came up with a plan for how the collection would be processed and created an itinerary for how the materials would be organized going forward.Item The art of soda : a summer spent in the collections of the Dr. Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute.(2017-06-22) Calcote, Madeleine.; Hafertepe, Kenneth, 1955-; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.During the summer of 2016, I completed a twelve week collections internship at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute in Waco, Texas. My project was to process a donation from 2012 and determine which items should be accessioned into the museum’s collection. When I accessioned objects into the collection, I created a record in PastPerfect, wrote an object description, wrote a condition report, supplied dimensions for the object, photographed the object and housed the object in collections storage. Over the summer I accessioned over 500 objects into the museum’s collection. In addition, I worked on the inventory for a large donation, which allowed me to be a part of each step of processing a donation. I also helped with tours, summer camps, and events as needed. During my time at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute, I learned how museums process donations and I became very familiar with PastPerfect.Item Art, Science, and History: A Summer in the Rio Grande Valley(2023-05-22) Valdez, Andrea; Holcomb, Holcomb; Museum Studies; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum StudiesIn the summer of 2022, I interned at the International Museum of Art and Science (IMAS) and the Museum of South Texas History (MOSTHistory). At IMAS, I was hired as a part-time educator and my responsibilities included facilitating educational programs and exhibits, creating a collection’s manual for the organization of the educational objects, and aided in the evaluation of a community pilot project. At MOSTHistory I worked with the Education Coordinator to create onboarding documentation and docent training. Both museums are in Rio Grande Valley, located in the southernmost point tip of Texas consisting of Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy County, home to over 1 million Hispanic Americans. My learning goal for these experiences was to learn how institutions with Hispanic audiences implement DEAI initiatives in their daily operations and strategic planning. Reinforcing the skills I learned in the Museum Studies program, I was able to bring my expertise in evaluation, education, and collections management and explore facilitating programing in a bilingual multicultural environment.Item Bubbles, fizz, and pop : my summer at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute.(2017-06-22) Chavira, Alyssa Nicole.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. This internship was focused on education and public programs at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute. There were three main components to my internship. The first was assisting and facilitating with two summer camp sessions and eventually leading the third session. The second was conducting tours and various public programs for field trips and visitors. As part of this, I was one of the first to lead a new interactive demonstration program. Finally, I developed monthly “Pop-Up” activities that revolved around various themes and holidays for visitors to participate in while they toured the galleries. I was very happy with how the internship was conducted, and I felt like my skills and abilities were challenged and honed.Item A case study of the Colonial Revival, collecting, and museum making in Texas.(2005-05) Clark, Eleanor K.; Hafertepe, Kenneth, 1955-; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.Miss Ima Hogg dedicated her life to creating a cultural and historical legacy in the state of Texas. An avid collector and patroness of the arts, she was responsible for the creation of three museums, each unique in purpose. This master's thesis discusses the life of Miss Hogg as the daughter of a legendary governor and as a philanthropist, but most particularly as the founder of three important museums. Hogg's interest in collecting art and antiques began in her youth and continued until her death at age ninety-three. The intent of this thesis is to demonstrate how her collecting progressed over several decades and to compare and contrast the Vamer-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site, Bayou Bend, and the Winedale Historical Center. Further, this thesis will analyze the evolution of her thinking about museums and evaluate the degree to which she reflected the expectation of her social class and the age in which she lived.Item Classified : title redacted : my internship at the George Bush Presidential Library.(2015-05-26) Salvaggio, Amy.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. How does a presidential library differ from standard archives? How do best practices translate under federal oversight? My summer internship in the archives of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library highlighted these questions by exploring the delicate balance between privacy and access, the difficulty of operating under government administration, and the importance of flexibility, consistency, and teamwork.Item Creating a searchable history.(2017-06-22) Berge, Courtney E.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.Throughout the summer and fall of 2016, I worked on a project for the Mayborn Museum Complex in Waco, Texas. For 6 months, I worked to archive the Mayborn’s digital born photographs. These images were taken at events, during renovations, and in the general running of the museum. My task was to find a place to store these images and make them accessible to the Mayborn staff. The first 3 months of this project involved uploading over 19,000 photographs and organizing them appropriately. To finish the project I needed to tag each image with applicable search terms and create a procedural manual, so the work I had been doing could continue. From start to finish I processed over 19,000 photographs and met with my project supervisor weekly to tag and identify images. Concluding this project, I have gained experience in archival standards for born digital files and the measures needed to ensure accessibility.Item A curious collaboration : explorations in exhibition development.(2017-06-22) Norris, Jenna.; Hafertepe, Kenneth, 1955-; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Through a series of stakeholder interviews, a targeted literature review, and external environmental scans I assembled a written report of findings and recommendations and created a robust database visualization. During the internship, I spent most of my time researching and developing an exhibit that would eventually become the center’s new permanent winter exhibit, Subzero: Discovering Life Among the Ice. I also worked closely with the director and helped with minor administration tasks as well as was a backup summer camp educator when needed. Because the center is a smaller institution, it was necessary for me to work in multiple departments and switch my roles at a moment’s notice. The report talks further about the work done at the Exploreum as well as how the internship allowed me to utilize knowledge and skills from my coursework, how it deepened my knowledge of the museum profession, and how it deepened my own personal knowledge.Item A summer of quiet : marketing, collections, and compassion at the Crow Collection of Asian Art.(2017-06-22) Sawyer, Amanda Rae.; Ames, Eric S.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University.
