Item Jaunts into the haunted basement.(2019-02-01) Gibson, Raquel.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.During the summer of 2014 for ten weeks I interned at the Utah State University Eastern Prehistoric Museum. My internship focus was working in collections specifically the museum’s archeology artifacts, which consisted mostly of Native American and geological items. The majority of work completed was in the form of an in depth inventory and updating the collection cataloging system Re:discovery. Other project included assisting in identifying NAGPRA items and helping to create a new exhibit. This PowerPoint will briefly review the experiences and the results of the work I accomplished.Item Soda pop art : caring for the artwork at the Dr. Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute.(2020-02-11) Neel, Amanda.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.I spent the summer of 2018 interning as a member of the collections management staff at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute in Waco, Texas. During the internship, I conducted an inventory of framed artwork housed at the museum, including artwork stored as part of a collection on repository. Much of the work involved in the inventory included cleaning artwork, developing a new storage arrangement for the artwork, updating condition reports and catalog records in Past Perfect, and reconciling unidentified objects to collections records. In addition to these responsibilities, I also completed other tasks related to various complications that arose during the inventory. This report explores the inventory work done, as well as other assignments completed during the internship.Item Sorting through the dust : creating an effective inventory in a challenging environment.(2015-05-26) Wilson, Megan K.; Hafertepe, Kenneth, 1955-; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.For any museum that has been in existence for a long time, one of the biggest challenges is reviewing the records of early acquisitions to ensure their compliance with current standards. Museum records are crucial to interpretation and preservation efforts, providing information on what the museum has and the story behind why an object was acquired. Thus in an effort to exert better physical and intellectual control over collections, the State Historical Society of North Dakota established an internship project to inventory the contents of an off-site storage facility. To determine how to organize the inventory report, the overarching goals of the project first had to be defined. What was the purpose of the inventory? The goals were as follows: 1.) Identify and process all non-accessioned objects. 2.) Locate all accessioned objects and assess whether these were in need of transfer to another storage facility. 3.) Create an action plan for all exterior objects regarding how they were to be rehoused on the interior. This goal was more involved, because it required the selection of objects on the exterior to be rehoused and those to be considered for deaccession. Second, adequate space within the facility had to be cleared for the introduction of a large number of massive objects. Thus, determinations on deaccession and movement of interior objects were a major component of this goal.Item A summer of quiet : marketing, collections, and compassion at the Crow Collection of Asian Art.(2017-06-22) Sawyer, Amanda Rae.; Ames, Eric S.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.During the summer of 2016, I spent ten weeks interning at the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art in Dallas with my work split evenly between the Marketing and Collections Departments. While working in Collections, I cataloged a bequest of over 600 objects, inventoried the museum’s permanent collection, and created higher levels consistency throughout PastPerfect records. During my time with the Marketing Department, I worked extensively in the cloud-based CRM platform PatronManager maintaining membership records, building tickets, pulling reports, and researching and building campaigns. I also participated in the development and copyediting of fall membership materials, spearheaded a project to review and debug the institution’s newly launched website, and researched and wrote text for missing exhibition pages. Throughout the internship, I completed “other duties as assigned,” including de-installing exhibits, changing light bulbs in the galleries, and sitting on a committee to revaluate the institution’s internship program, among other tasks. The internship provided insight into the operations of a rapidly growing midsize museum approaching the accreditation process and working to serve as a center of community in a large city.
