Dept. of Museum Studies.Completing a museum internship is an excellent way for a graduate student to receive hands-on experience in the field and to gain understanding about the realities of museum work while completing a post-graduate degree. In this paper, I relate the experiences I had during my graduate internship at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, TN. The experience was an overwhelmingly positive one which taught me a great deal, but along the way I also learned lessons that I believe will stand me in good stead as I pursue a career in museums.Item Engage, explore, enjoy : an internship at the Mayborn Museum Complex.(2014-06-11) Embry, Anastasia Elise.; Caston, Ellie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. For my internship I processed a large incoming donation while also completing other duties as assigned such as working on exhibit design and educational programs for the museum. In this paper I discuss my various experiences and the methods I used while completing my internship. I also focus on the various issues that I encountered while processing the donation and how I chose to address those problems. Overall, my internship was a rewarding experience and an in depth look at collections management along with the various other aspects of museum work.Item Classified : title redacted : my internship at the George Bush Presidential Library.(2015-05-26) Salvaggio, Amy.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. How does a presidential library differ from standard archives? How do best practices translate under federal oversight? My summer internship in the archives of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library highlighted these questions by exploring the delicate balance between privacy and access, the difficulty of operating under government administration, and the importance of flexibility, consistency, and teamwork.Item At the crossroads of education and reality- my experience at the Poage Legislative Library.(2015-05-26) Swanson, Erik J.; Ames, Eric S.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. The W.R. Poage Legislative Library was established in September 1979 and honors the legacy of former Congressman W.R. Poage. The library boasts 12 congressional, 8 state legislative, 4 judicial, and several other collections all designed to tell the story of Texas legislators and government officials. The mission of the Poage Library is to, "support programs designed to inform and educate students, scholars, and the general public ion the history of Congress, the legislative process, and current issues facing both local, state, and national governments." The internship was designed to provide a real world museum experience and compare how the education at Baylor prepares its students. This insight would be invaluable to the faculty and future students. The results of the internship provide a unique look at how the museum studies department transitions in the work force. As expected, there were some resounding successes, such as the exhibit design portion of the project. However, it also highlighted problems that the museum studies program does not cover, with the most notable example being how to compromise with a director who is less trained in museum preservation techniques.Item Designing a gallery and then some : experiences as an exhibits intern at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute.(2015-05-26) Browder, Jennifer L.; Smith, Gary Neil.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. For ten weeks during the summer of 2014 I interned at Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott, Arizona. Sharlot Hall Museum is a cultural center focused on the historical, social and natural aspects of Territorial Arizona. Opening in 1928, the museum is a mid-sized museum featuring seven historic buildings, an exhibit center, and a Library and Archive. Sharlot Hall’s mission is to foster community understanding and appreciation of Arizona’s territorial history and to promote involvement and support for research, collections, exhibits, and programming. The purpose of the internship was to gain exposure to many areas of the museum, with a focus in education. The primary tasks consisted of assisting with summer youth programs, working in the museum archives, being exposed to the Living History program and coordination, developing potential digital technology for the museum, and editing content for a new digital kiosk display. Additional experiences consisted of work with the volunteer program, including observations of docent tours, participation in docent training, and development of a docent guide. Finally, the internship included the attendance of several staff meetings. The results of the internship were a greater understanding of the challenges many history museums including Sharlot Hall faces. Located in a small town, retirement community, the museum has some obstacles to overcome in terms of funding and attendance. Additionally, educational programming is primarily directed towards an older demographic that can alienate younger generations.Item Sorting through the dust : creating an effective inventory in a challenging environment.(2015-05-26) Wilson, Megan K.; Hafertepe, Kenneth, 1955-; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. For any museum that has been in existence for a long time, one of the biggest challenges is reviewing the records of early acquisitions to ensure their compliance with current standards. Museum records are crucial to interpretation and preservation efforts, providing information on what the museum has and the story behind why an object was acquired. Thus in an effort to exert better physical and intellectual control over collections, the State Historical Society of North Dakota established an internship project to inventory the contents of an off-site storage facility. To determine how to organize the inventory report, the overarching goals of the project first had to be defined. What was the purpose of the inventory? The goals were as follows: 1.) Identify and process all non-accessioned objects. 2.) Locate all accessioned objects and assess whether these were in need of transfer to another storage facility. 3.) Create an action plan for all exterior objects regarding how they were to be rehoused on the interior. This goal was more involved, because it required the selection of objects on the exterior to be rehoused and those to be considered for deaccession. Second, adequate space within the facility had to be cleared for the introduction of a large number of massive objects. Thus, determinations on deaccession and movement of interior objects were a major component of this goal.Item Working for the railroad : my summer at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum.(2016-09-08) Clark, Michelle Renee.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. My internship was spent working in collections, education, and volunteer coordination at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Time in collections was spent inventorying and cataloging. The biggest collection that I worked on was the Public Relations Files, creating a rough Finding Aid. When working in education we created the summer tour, and I helped to give the summer tour as well as several of their regular tours. Volunteer coordination helped me learn how to handle volunteers as well as scheduling them for regular hours and special events.Item Being human : my summer at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.(2016-09-08) Clark, Emily Ruth.; Hafertepe, Kenneth, 1955-; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. In the summer of 2015, I worked as a Graduate Intern at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, TX. Two days per week, I worked with the School Programming department observing, teaching, and developing community outreach programs. Another two days each week, I worked with the Public Programs department, specifically the Gallery Experience team, who works within the galleries to help with crowd control, answer visitor questions, and interact with guests to help them learn about exhibit content. I was able to assist the Gallery Experience team in writing a staff training guide for the Being Human Hall. Lastly, one day per week, I spent time working with the Volunteer Services department at the Perot, which manages over 1300 active volunteers. Overall, my experience provided insight into the workings of a large and successful science museum.Item The art of soda : a summer spent in the collections of the Dr. Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute.(2017-06-22) Calcote, Madeleine.; Hafertepe, Kenneth, 1955-; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.During the summer of 2016, I completed a twelve week collections internship at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute in Waco, Texas. My project was to process a donation from 2012 and determine which items should be accessioned into the museum’s collection. When I accessioned objects into the collection, I created a record in PastPerfect, wrote an object description, wrote a condition report, supplied dimensions for the object, photographed the object and housed the object in collections storage. Over the summer I accessioned over 500 objects into the museum’s collection. In addition, I worked on the inventory for a large donation, which allowed me to be a part of each step of processing a donation. I also helped with tours, summer camps, and events as needed. During my time at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute, I learned how museums process donations and I became very familiar with PastPerfect.Item Bubbles, fizz, and pop : my summer at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute.(2017-06-22) Chavira, Alyssa Nicole.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. This internship was focused on education and public programs at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute. There were three main components to my internship. The first was assisting and facilitating with two summer camp sessions and eventually leading the third session. The second was conducting tours and various public programs for field trips and visitors. As part of this, I was one of the first to lead a new interactive demonstration program. Finally, I developed monthly “Pop-Up” activities that revolved around various themes and holidays for visitors to participate in while they toured the galleries. I was very happy with how the internship was conducted, and I felt like my skills and abilities were challenged and honed.Item Archives and libraries at The Museum of Flight.(2017-06-22) Person, Hanna E.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies. My internship focused on managing materials in both the library and the archive at The Museum of Flight. The library received a grant to process the manual collection and input data into their MARC database. I cleaned, rehoused, cataloged and organized hundreds of manuals. In the archive I began the process of properly archiving the G. Harry Stine collection. I roughly organized the materials and created an accurate inventory. Then I came up with a plan for how the collection would be processed and created an itinerary for how the materials would be organized going forward.Item A summer of quiet : marketing, collections, and compassion at the Crow Collection of Asian Art.(2017-06-22) Sawyer, Amanda Rae.; Ames, Eric S.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.During the summer of 2016, I spent ten weeks interning at the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art in Dallas with my work split evenly between the Marketing and Collections Departments. While working in Collections, I cataloged a bequest of over 600 objects, inventoried the museum’s permanent collection, and created higher levels consistency throughout PastPerfect records. During my time with the Marketing Department, I worked extensively in the cloud-based CRM platform PatronManager maintaining membership records, building tickets, pulling reports, and researching and building campaigns. I also participated in the development and copyediting of fall membership materials, spearheaded a project to review and debug the institution’s newly launched website, and researched and wrote text for missing exhibition pages. Throughout the internship, I completed “other duties as assigned,” including de-installing exhibits, changing light bulbs in the galleries, and sitting on a committee to revaluate the institution’s internship program, among other tasks. The internship provided insight into the operations of a rapidly growing midsize museum approaching the accreditation process and working to serve as a center of community in a large city.Item Uncharted Waters: Navigating a Summer of Transitions My Summer Internship at the Mayborn Museum(2017-06-22) Dorssey, Colby; Caston, Ellie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. College of Arts and Sciences. Dept. of Museum Studies. This internship presentation summarizes an experience as the Center for Creative Connections Intern at the Dallas Museum of Art during Summer 2017. During this internship, an evaluation was done on the Pop-up Art Spot volunteers and visitors. It provided a chance to survey visitors, observe volunteers, and gather data revolving around the Pop-up Art Spot outside the Keir Collection exhibit in the Dallas Museum of Art. The main goals of this project were: to learn what activities are most engaging to visitors and had the highest participation, to learn about visitors who access and interact with the Pop-up Art Spot, to see if visitors learn anything new from the activities provided, and to obtain volunteer feedback. Through a series of indicators and benchmarks, this data was compiled into a report that informed changes to future Pop-up Art Spot activities.
