Tall Tales and True Tellings: Firearms Research from the Collections of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum
Andrews, Thomas David; Holcomb, Julie; Museum Studies; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies
During the summer of 2018, I embarked on a three-month project with the collections staff of the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum to examine a selection of firearms in their collection and assess their provenance, condition, and projected insurance value. I completed this project using research skills from my undergraduate studies in History as well as those I learned in collections management as a graduate student and as a graduate assistant working at the Mayborn Museum Complex. The culmination of this project was a report summarizing my findings as well as suggesting updated insurance values for each of the objects which I examined. In addition, I included an appendix with suggested updates to signage in light of new information discovered during my research.

A Summer Odyssey: Uncovering My Professional Self in the Rainiest City in America
(2023-05-22) Pearson, Catherine; Holcomb, Julie; Museum Studies; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies
I spent the summer of 2022 interning at the Exploreum Science Center in Mobile, Alabama. Although originally hired to work for ten weeks with the first two weeks in exhibit development and the remaining in the education department, my job evolved into a 19-week internship across the administration, education, and exhibit departments. During the internship, I spent most of my time researching and developing an exhibit that would eventually become the center’s new permanent winter exhibit, Subzero: Discovering Life Among the Ice. I also worked closely with the director and helped with minor administration tasks as well as was a backup summer camp educator when needed. Because the center is a smaller institution, it was necessary for me to work in multiple departments and switch my roles at a moment’s notice. The report talks further about the work done at the Exploreum as well as how the internship allowed me to utilize knowledge and skills from my coursework, how it deepened my knowledge of the museum profession, and how it deepened my own personal knowledge.

(2023-05-22) Skroch, Michelle Rosena; Holcomb, Julie; Museum Studies; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies
This professional internship experience spanned the summer months of 2022 and focused on a wall-to-wall inventory of the Bell County Museum’s off-site collection storge facility. The inventory consisted mainly of glass and kitchenware, farming tools, medical objects, and oversized objects like furniture. The work included updating PastPerfect entries, photographs, locations, rehousing, and documenting Found In Collection (FIC) objects. I also participated in the construction of an in-house exhibit and set-up of a traveling exhibit. To gain a better understanding of the museum’s relationship with the community and its goals I attended a board meeting and collections committee meeting. This report provides details to the work completed during the internship.

Art, Science, and History: A Summer in the Rio Grande Valley
(2023-05-22) Valdez, Andrea; Holcomb, Holcomb; Museum Studies; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies
In the summer of 2022, I interned at the International Museum of Art and Science (IMAS) and the Museum of South Texas History (MOSTHistory). At IMAS, I was hired as a part-time educator and my responsibilities included facilitating educational programs and exhibits, creating a collection’s manual for the organization of the educational objects, and aided in the evaluation of a community pilot project. At MOSTHistory I worked with the Education Coordinator to create onboarding documentation and docent training. Both museums are in Rio Grande Valley, located in the southernmost point tip of Texas consisting of Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy County, home to over 1 million Hispanic Americans. My learning goal for these experiences was to learn how institutions with Hispanic audiences implement DEAI initiatives in their daily operations and strategic planning. Reinforcing the skills I learned in the Museum Studies program, I was able to bring my expertise in evaluation, education, and collections management and explore facilitating programing in a bilingual multicultural environment.

Forward Thinking Strategies: Envisioning a Collaborative and Hybrid Library at Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino
(2023-05-22) Gallegos, Katrina; Hafertepe, Kenneth; Museum Studies; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies
During the summer and fall of 2022, I was a Graduate Latino Museum Studies Fellow (LMSP) with Smithsonian Institution’s (SI) National Museum of the American Latino (NMAL) and Smithsonian Libraries and Archives (SLA). I was tasked with conducting a deep dive exploration about how SLA and NMAL can create a hybrid Research Center Library in the nation’s newest and yet to be opened museum. Through a series of stakeholder interviews, a targeted literature review, and external environmental scans I assembled a written report of findings and recommendations and created a robust database visualization. This report and dataset were made in service of NMAL and SLA leadership and help them visualize a successful research services model for NMAL. The values of sustained collaboration and community-building guided this exploration with the intent to reveal the needs of both internal and external community stakeholders.

I spent the summer of 2018 interning as a member of the collections management staff at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute in Waco, Texas. During the internship, I conducted an inventory of framed artwork housed at the museum, including artwork stored as part of a collection on repository. Much of the work involved in the inventory included cleaning artwork, developing a new storage arrangement for the artwork, updating condition reports and catalog records in Past Perfect, and reconciling unidentified objects to collections records. In addition to these responsibilities, I also completed other tasks related to various complications that arose during the inventory. This report explores the inventory work done, as well as other assignments completed during the internship.

(2019-02-01) Hofbauer, Abigail F.; Holcomb, Julie.; Museum Studies.; Baylor University. College of Arts and Sciences. Dept. of Museum Studies.
This internship presentation summarizes an experience as the Center for Creative Connections Intern at the Dallas Museum of Art during Summer 2017. This online exhibit is an exciting project, which will allow more people to have access to the Armstrong Browning Library's 19th century collection. Throughout my internship, I enjoyed learning the transcription process, the process of preparing letters for digitization, writing blogs, and gathering valuable cultural and historical knowledge about the Victorian era.

The art of soda : a summer spent in the collections of the Dr. Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute.
(2017-06-22) Calcote, Madeleine.; Hafertepe, Kenneth, 1955-; Museum Studies.; Baylor University.; Baylor University. Dept. of Museum Studies.
During the summer of 2016, I completed a twelve week collections internship at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute in Waco, Texas. My project was to process a donation from 2012 and determine which items should be accessioned into the museum’s collection. When I accessioned objects into the collection, I created a record in PastPerfect, wrote an object description, wrote a condition report, supplied dimensions for the object, photographed the object and housed the object in collections storage. Over the summer I accessioned over 500 objects into the museum’s collection. In addition, I worked on the inventory for a large donation, which allowed me to be a part of each step of processing a donation. I also helped with tours, summer camps, and events as needed. During my time at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute, I learned how museums process donations and I became very familiar with PastPerfect.
